Doomed to have chapped lips forever!
June 25th 2004 by cybertoad in meI have always had chapped lips ever since I can remember. And my longest lasting bad habit? Picking at my lips to get rid of the dry skin. Some people bite their nails, I screw with my lips. Since I used to get yelled at all the time by my parents, my friends and my husband I have now limited it to my morning commute. I get it all in at that time, where no one can bug me or berate me. This morning they were especially dry so I thought I’d make my plea out to you guys to see if you have *any other* suggestions? Click on “more” to if you want to see whatI’ve tried already…
So far I have done a few things to try to ease the dryness. I briefly mentioned it to a doctor and he just offered that I drink more water. Good idea but this does not explain why I’ve had it consistently all my life. If I weren’t drinking enough water all those years, I think I would have seen other health affects. I’ve also looked on at health sites and have come up with nothing.
Of course, I’ve tried all sorts of products and lipsticks, asking department store make-up counter girls or at beauty products stores. I’ve also tried different brands of lipsticks since I always wear lipstick (since my lips are chapped, it makes them look nicer and keeps them more moisturized).
Here are some of the lip balms and lip remedies I’ve tried to no avail – I have seen no improvement after using these products:
Clinique Superbalm
Origins Lip Remedy
mint hemp lip balm
Carmex
Smith’s Rosebud Salve
Burt’s Bees beeswax lip balm
every type of Blistex imaginable, medicated & non-medicated
same with Chapstick
Mary Kay Satin Lips system w/ lip balm, lip mask and lip treatment
But… I’m willing to take more suggestions. Any one have the miracle chapped lip cure??

that stuff won’t really work if you don’t give then a chance to heal first…do they ever get healed from you picking at them? That might be leading to more places to peel.

They heal for a few days and then start drying out again… some days are better than others. Today they are bad.

I used to be a lip picker too. Like MishMish said, you have to let them heal and break the picking habit. Also, most lipsticks are very drying and that can create a vicious cycle of covering the problem it’s created. The thing I’ve found that works best is – believe it or not – Lip Gunk by Urban Decay. It’s a tinted lip gloss in a tube that you apply with a wand. So it gives you some color as well as moisturizing. I couldn’t believe the change it made in my lips – and it tastes good too! I would definitely recommend skipping lipstick for a while and trying a tinted gloss instead. And for around the house or when you don’t want color, Badger Balm is great – and more moisturizing than the balms that come in a tube! I have a container that’s barely used – you can have it if you want – you can scrape off the top layer.

Oh, and if you just can’t give up lipstick, try Urban Decay’s Pleather Pencils in combination with the Lip Gunk – seriously moisturizing.

i’m the same way… and being a trumpet player only elevates the problem. what i’ve found to work the best (so far) is some vaseline lip stuff i’ve found.
anywho, just thought i’d drop in and say hello. i’ll keep an eye out for floaty pens while im in china.
