Yes, they played “Particle Man”…

Well, it’s Wednesday and I’m in an ambivalent mood – not bad, but not jumping-up-&-down either.

Last night Kenny and I went to the They Might Be Giants concert. We met up with our friend Mandy as well as Kymberlie, Irfan and his friend. It was a good concert – loud and entertaining. Kenny amused himself by watching the crowd and commenting on some of the geeks he saw. He wasn’t mean-spirited but the crowd did have some interesting looking people including a guy with a long mohawk dressed in black carrying around a skull and leading his dazed (er, stoned) looking girlfriend around. Since TMBG has been around since 1982 – I didn’t realize the guys had been around that long until Kenny pointed it out to me – the crowd consisted of two generations… my age group (in our 30’s) and the younger kids (early 20’s). I guess these younger kids are into the group because they are considered retro? Weird, huh. Makes you feel old, doesn’t it?

We didn’t get home till midnight but the music invigorated me (I don’t usually go see live music) and on the drive home I rolled the windows down, opened the sunroof, played an Argentinean CD and took a longer way home through the street of Downtown. It was wonderful! There was a breeze that was so refreshing after being stuck in a muggy, unventilated club for over 4 hours and the streets of Downtown were empty. I even did the “wave” with my hand out the window! And do you know how cool it is to be sitting at one end of a street at a red light and see all the lights ahead of you for 20 blocks or more turn green in succession? They are long lights too and I cruised happily through half or dozen or so lights before they turned red, only forcing me to stop two more times before I made it the freeway.

The freeway was relatively empty too and Betty was enjoyable to drive . I kept the windows partially down (typically I roll them up and only keep the sunroof open) and felt the wind on my face as I sailed down the freeway. I was bad and at one point floored it (gotta love that Turbo) to get around a slow car in the left lane. I must admit I hit 90 mph rather quickly when I passed him and got back into the left lane…but dammit, it felt good and made me feel alive! (Don’t worry, I slowed down and went back to a reasonable speed soon after passing).

Tonight will be a much more rested evening and I am looking forward to it. I have hadn’t a single moment to go run some much needed errands and get some quick, minor things done around the house so tonight and tomorrow will be dedicated to these things. More for my benefit than yours, I’ve put my “to do” list in the (more) section so I can keep track of what I have to do.

OK folks, I must get back to work! I have a staff meeting at 1 PM and I need to get ready. Hasta luego amigos…

You make a good point about the younger crowd thinking everything old is retro. The first thing I said to Leigh as soon we entered the place was “man, that’s a young crowd”. When did I join the old crowd? ;-)

Good to see you guys! Kenny should have stood up and danced!

My son Andy’s favorite store is Hot Topic.. sort of a punk retro store. Andy is 9 years old and I love to look at all the t shirts.. they have Social Distortion, Black Flag, The Clash.. etc… I saw all those bands live about 20 years ago… I don’t tell the kids that work at the store… I wonder what it is like to them? I mean when I was 20 years old.. I guess my father thought I was crazy for listening to Eddie Cochran and Bill Haley (the rockabilly phase)
