Re-culturing Weekend
July 26th 2004 by cybertoad in re-capsWhat a great weekend although practically unproductive!! That’s OK though. So the house stays a little dustier than it should and the yard can wait another week… At least the dishes are done, the trash has been taken out, Kenny did some of his laundry and my clothes is put away (yay, I can see the bathroom floor once again).
If you notice by my title, I took Saturday as an opportunity to hit some museums and grab a foreign flick. Kenny and I hadn’t done this in a while and we both had been thinking we needed to do it before long. Saturday was a perfect opportunity and there were some great exhibits.
More details in the section below…
Friday night: Sherry and EJ just moved into their brand-spankin’ new home and we were one of their first guests. EJ made a lovely dinner (he’s a great cook) and we had a blast catching up and playing with the kids. Their home is of course lovely and I know they are going to get so much enjoyment in this new space! Congratulations once again guys!
Saturday: Slept in till noon and then headed down to the Museum District. Our MFA has a Cafe Express in the basement so we had lunch there. The CAM closed the earliest so we went there first and spent a while looking at the interactive global art exhibit and then the photography downstairs.
Afterward walked back to the MFA and wandered through the Latin American art exhibit, wandered upstairs through the entertaining interactive part of the exhibit and headed over to the other wing to see the Murano glass exhibit – ooh, to be rich and be able to buy some of these pieces! I drool over colorful, intricate blown glass objects!
The last exhibit we went through was the Diane Arbus photography exhibit. I took in everything here, read every placard, skimmed through her notebook entries. I was enthralled, inspired and moved by her portraits. What a skill and to do it all with a manual 35 mm camera like the 1971 Nikkormat I already own! She was really a true artist, her talent was authentic, consistent and unique. I was in awe. Kenny waited for me 20 minutes at the end of the exhibit as I took everything in. Although I do not take portraits, I still want to grab my old clunky film camera and take some new black and white shots. I haven’t done this in a couple of years and may be what I need to get out of my photography slump.
Saturday night: After essentially closing the museum down we headed Downtown. I wanted to see the French-Canadian film Seducing Dr. Lewis and it was only playing over at the Angelika. We had dinner at a sushi restaurant next door to the theater and took in the 9:30 showing. The movie was light-hearted and fun. A good way to end my “re-culturing day”.
Sunday: It started off beautifully but stormy weather rolled in that afternoon. We lounged around the house and had to cancel our plans to fly to Galveston that evening to meet a friend. Instead, since he was in Houston we met him for dinner in town. We hope to fly next Sunday to his going-away dinner (he is moving to Germany).
As you can see, I had a lovely weekend and spent some good quality time with the hubby. He even bought me a mobile for my office which I have always wanted. I hung it above where I sit at my desk which is near an air vent so it moves every so delicately and gracefully. I love it!
Once again it’s Monday but it’s gray and not really rainy, just icky. The dogs were so lazy this morning that I had to physically get them up so they’d go outside and do their business. It’s just something about the day that made me want to get back in bed with them. When I left Heidi didn’t even follow me to the door like she usually does. She stayed in bed with Ginger and Kenny!

you definitely had an arty-fartsy Saturday! i learned a lot of techniques at the Open House on Saturday. only one person showed up (that i knew) and even though i was saddened by my own turn out, i enjoyed myself as i am starting to pick up cool new things to try out at my own workshop.

Unproductive weekends are the best!
