Hero, jamboree and the Piney Woods
September 14th 2004 by cybertoad in re-capsThis weekend was mostly spent out-of-town with Hanna… details below.
Friday night: I met Kenny, Kathy & Tom, Robert & his brother Oskar, Joe and Spencer downtown at the Angelika Theater. We ate dinner at the cafe before heading in to see the re-release of Hero. It was a little more over-the-top/theatrical and symbolic than I had expected but what a beautiful movie! Colors play an integral part of the story and the cinematography was superb. Sort of reminded me of how Amélie was done.
Saturday: Woke up and met up with Hanna’s future mother-in-law. Hanna was having yet another bridal shower but this was up in her hometown of Broaddus out in East Texas with family and family friends who live up there. I was hitching a ride up so I wouldn’t have to drive the 2 1/2 hours alone.
We made it right when the shower was supposed to start. It was a nice shower and once again, Hanna and Michael made out with a ton more gifts. I also met Nina although very, very briefly. Afterwards, Hanna, Michael and I headed to Hailey’s family’s house where we rode around a bit before heading home to change.
Saturday night: It was time for supper so we went out for burgers where Hanna’s friend Dennon met us. After dinner, without knowing what to expect, we went to the East Texas Jamboree show. We were expecting an open venue where you could stand around and listen to music but instead it was actually theater style seating. We took some seats in the back and had fun whispering comments back and forth. I think we were probably annoying the people around us but no one said anything. The singing was pretty good though and it was entertaining to say the least. I didn’t recognize many of the songs but I was told they were old country songs.
Got home around 11 PM, watched a movie and headed to bed.
Sunday: We woke up at 8 AM to get an early start on the road. By noon we were back at Hanna’s dropping Michael and the dogs off where he could happily watch football all afternoon. Hanna then took me home where we grabbed Kenny and headed back out the door. We had a late lunch and hit a couple of stores. It was nice to spend some more time with Hanna. The rest of the evening was spent lounging and not doing much of anything.
This was my first time to Broaddus although Hanna has been trying to get me to come up. It’s a beautiful part if the state and home to the Angelina National Forest. Lots of green all around. As always, Hanna’s family is wonderful and treats me like one their own. I’d like to fly in with Kenny and have him see it too. Maybe we can do it later during the fall and after the wedding so we can see the color change. Hanna says its beautiful – and I’m sure it will be especially nice to fly over it.
I took a few pictures – go check out the photo album.
