Bug bugged again!

April 12th 2006 by cybertoad in beetle buzz

Over a month ago I had a check engine light come on in the Beetle and when I finally took it in, it turned out to be something to do with the turbo.

Unfortunately, less than 24 hours after that visit the darn light came back on so back I went (OK, I didn’t take it back for another few weeks)…

This time the error read as an “internal electrical failure of mass air flow meter” so once again, under warranty, they replaced the air mass flow meter, whatever that may do!

I don’t know if I consider this lucky that the warranty has covered all of my problems or disastrous because I have to take it in for such silly things a couple of times a year. I guess I’ll be content that it gets resolved so quickly and my dealership’s service is really above average. I would definitely recommend them.

So far no more lights have turned on so till the next one…

The mass air flow meter measures the amount of air your engine takes and based on that your car’s computer can figure out how much gasoline and electricity to give your car.

The light on my jeep keeps coming on and when we get a diagnostic check run it says something about “evap leak” – basically, if we don’t turn the gas cap at least three revolutions when we close it, the light comes on…if we do turn it several times then no light! Weird!

As much as I think the Bug is cute, and would love to own one some day, that is just crazy that it seems to need so much work. Even if it is all under warranty. I suspect that like my Civic, yours never had to go into the shop – so all those lights coming on would drive me nuts!
