My latest movie reviews…
September 1st 2006 by cybertoad in moviesPayback (NetFlix): Ugh. This movie from ‘99 tried to hearken the days of a 50’s story with a tough lead character who is seeking vengeance with no mercy. Let’s just say it tried too hard. Mel Gibson’s character shows no emotion and the lines he delivers are just cheesy. The story is boring and predictable too.
Saint Ralph (NetFlix): This is a Canadian indie film that actually was not dark and depressing. It had odd humor at times (not suitable for young kids) but the story was refreshing and sweet. Still predictable though – don’t I sound like a broken record? The actor who plays the lead character, a 14 year old boy, does an amazing job and is able to carry the whole film! I look forward to seeing him in other projects. Good movie to rent if you are tired of blood, sex and drugs.
In Her Shoes (NetFlix): I was working on my laptop when this movie was playing so I only paid half-attention to it. From what I could gather with my diverted attention it was essentially a coming of age movie for two unlikely sisters (Cameron Diaz and remember the chick from Muriel’s Wedding?). Unique storyline and another good family flick without blood, sex or drugs (OK, there was a quick sex scene but you don’t see anything).

I seem to remember liking Payback when I saw it in the theater in 1999. It has been awhile though, so I wonder how I would feel about it now? As for In Her Shoes – I didn’t like the book. I like other work by Jennifer Weiner, but not that one. I generally am not a Cameron Diaz fan. So now I actually want to watch the movie to see if it is better than I would expect. Hmmm…
