Movie Reviews
October 4th 2006 by cybertoad in moviesThe Science of Sleep (free screening @ Angelika) – Ever since I signed up for the Angelika Theater e-newsletter I receive free screening passes for various independent films. I typically can’t go but last week Kenny and I were both free so we headed Downtown.
The movie stars Gael García Bernal and was directed by the same guy who did Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. You can tell it was because it does have the same feel but you can also tell that the budget was lower. As a result it’s a bit campy and more artistic. The seemingly innocuous plain-looking French actress steals the movie though. Bernal is very pretty to look at but his character seems a bit flat to me. I recommend it as a rental when you feel like watching something relatively light-hearted and “artsy-fartsy”.
House of Fools (NetFlix) – Kenny added a bunch of foreign films into his NetFlix queues a while back and we are now getting the films. Last week we watched a Chechen/Russian film and lo and behold, the next film we received was also Chechen/Russian. I was a bit leery of a movie that featured a Russian psychiatric hospital on the border with Chechnya and my fear was further heightened when I found out Bryan Adams was also in the movie… But believe or not, the movie worked and I really did enjoy it. Acting was superb, storyline was unique and the characters were well-developed. You cared for even the minor characters. Well worth a watch if you like foreign flicks!
