I loved this essay! My father emigrated from Cuba in 1960 and never returned, leaving behind his mother, brother, sister-in-law and several nieces, aunts, and uncles. When he became ill a couple of years ago, my sister and I were able to "find" our uncle who worked for the Cuban Weather Service for almost 50 years. My uncle and my father have since passed on (at the ages of 91 and 85 years), but we remain in contact with our cousins and hope to travel to Cuba to meet them by the end of this year. I hope to have as great an experience as you, and will definitely strive for the Habanero experience, rather than that of a tourist.

Thank you for posting a picture. You were my first hit when looking up my face that looks exactly like yours! Minor but annoying. I thought it must be yet another reaction to food! Thank you for the info

Sarah - welcome to my blog! I have been actually blogging since 2001 on & off and just can't give it up completely despite year-long breaks. :) I use to run a Houston blogging group way back in the day call H-Town Blogs.

And as a native Houstonian - I love to share Houston with others. Feel free to reach out to me outside of the blog as well!

How wonderful to "meet" another Houstonian blogger. I saw your photo of the morning sky here in Houston (via Karen Walrond) and I had to chuckle because I was out in my bathrobe taking a photo of it too! Your blog looks wonderful. We've been in Houston 3 years so I will look up some of your tips. I enjoyed reading about your trip to Cuba. I would love to experience life NOT as a tourist in such a unique country.

Leslie - I was in Florence back in '98 but it was the height of summer, it was scorching hot and packed with tourists so we didn't visit the Uffizi. I will definitely add it to my list for when I return!

Eric - I will be in NYC in a week and a half - I will check that out! Thank you!

I went to the New York Earth Room, many years ago. Quite meditative. And it was free at the time. Consider visiting and it's a quick one.
