New postition at work has me so busy!

Posted by cybertoad on 08/24/2011 in commentary, misc |

Eep! The work week has flown by! I am in a new position at work – new department too. Even changed floors and cubicles. After five years in one department, I am now in marketing as the Social Media Manager for a large restaurant company. I am over two major brands which have over 300 locations all combined. One brand is mostly in Texas and one is national, it even has some international locations.

As Social Media Manager I get to play on Facebook and Twitter but it’s so so much more than that. I am also responsible for email blasts, website updates, press releases… even the hold messages you hear when you call the restaurant. So much data coming in, I am overwhelmed right now trying to learn about both brands and all of our ongoing promotions and how to gather all the data and generate useful metrics out of all of this data! Add to that the fact that I am new to marketing and am needing to quickly learn all the “lingo” and acronyms like ROI, POP, AYCE, LTO…

I’m getting there though. And despite my moments of panic and doubt, I’m excited about the challenges!

Foto Friday: The Varsity

Posted by cybertoad on 07/22/2011 in foto friday, photography, travel, usa |

Last month I had the opportunity to go to Atlanta for a business trip. This was my 1st visit to the the city and although I had no time to actually site-see (I was in a 2-day workshop), I met another great conference attendee who had driven there and offered to take me to the airport when it ended.

I had scheduled a later flight out and had a few hours to spare so I joined her for an early lunch at the historical Varsity Drive-In (“The World’s Largest Drive-in Restaurant”). She always makes a point to stop here whenever she is in town, even if it is only a lay-over at the airport, she schedules enough time in between flights.

Some people say it’s just an over-rated greasy burger, others say it’s the best burger they’ve had (my husband is one of those). I thought it was pretty darn good and tasty and coupled with The Varsity’s nostalgic interior and counter clerks barking “What’ll ha have!”, it’s a required stop in Atlanta.

Review: Merde Happens

Posted by cybertoad on 07/20/2011 in france, library |

Merde Happens
Merde Happens by Stephen Clarke
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the third in a series by Clarke featuring Paul West, a British ex-pat living in Paris. This time, Paul takes his adventures overseas to America. But don’t worry, he still continues to give his hilarious opinion on the French since his French girlfriends comes along for the adventure.

I agree with another reviewer that this may be his best of the series or at least as good as the first one, A Year in the Merde. Merde Happens was a quick read that had me chuckling to myself and looking forward to the next time I could pick it back up.

This book and the whole series is especially fun if you have every studied French, have experience with the French or have traveled France although not a requirement since Clarke is a wonderful humor writer. He really captures the conversation and somehow has mastered the ability to write in comedic timing!

Ho hum…

Posted by cybertoad on 07/14/2011 in re-caps |

Hiya! {waves} Still here but haven’t had anything exciting to tell. Stayed home all weekend – barely ventured out in the backyard even – due to allergies (sinus headache, achiness, congestion).

Rest of the week has just been work… about to change positions and anxious to get more details and make the transition. No details yet but let’s just say I am so excited about it! It’s a good move for me!

Other than that, getting ready to teach my first class. I am teaching “Intro to Photography” for youths starting tonight at the Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center. It’s a 6 week course, 1 1/2 hours every Thursday night – last class will be a student photo exhibit! I have been anxiously going over and tweaking my presentation for tonight. This week we will review the history of photography, how a camera works and introduce the basics on exposure. I’ve learned so much just researching it!

So that is where I’ve been… how about you?

UPDATE:  Eep. Water main issues have cancelled classes tonight so we can’t start till next week! I was anxious but looking forward to it! Oh well…

Review: Listening Is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project

Listening Is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps ProjectListening Is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project by Dave Isay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Quick read! I devoured these stories in under a week! I am a huge NPR fan and 1st heard the StoryCorps narrations on the radio. The stories are always so timeless and captivating.

Only negative about the book? I wish the stories were longer! Love that they include a picture of the story-tellers at the end.

Review: Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Posted by cybertoad on 07/09/2011 in library |

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What an incredible story of endurance, survival, torture and heroism. Such a compelling story but dragged out by the level of detail the author brings in. At times in the book I feel like I am living Zamperini’s hell in real-time.

The well-researched details made it a bit hard to get through but at the same time I learned so much about the US WWII efforts in the Pacific theater. I even impressed my husband with my new knowledge on B-24s! 🙂

So the book loses stars because it gets bogged down but it gains stars because of the story. It’s a good read for those of us whose strongest subject is not history but we are still interested. In short, Louis Zamperini’s life before the war, during the war and after the war is worth reading about.
