Dark Water, Shopping & MishMish

Posted by cybertoad on 07/31/2006 in re-caps |

Another warm weekend! At least the rain stopped for most of the weekend. Here is my update:

Friday: Headed over to EJ & Sherry’s to watch a couple of movies. I’ll review Dark Lady and Shaun of the Dead in a separate entry so you’ll have to wait for those.

Saturday: Kenny & I spent the day shopping, mostly at Memorial City Mall. We weer pretty tired by the end of the day so we stayed home and watched another movie. I feel asleep halfway through it so I will have to re-watch it and review it later as well.

Sunday: I haven’t seen Hanna in a long time so I met her for a late lunch/early dinner and introduced her to geocaching as well. We had a blast catching up! Thanks for spending the afternoon with me. It had been too long!

It doesn’t seem like I did much but I actually did. I got our nasty shower stall cleaned and I treated our crepe myrtle with fungicide (too much rain lately). I also returned a few items while we were out and I got some good time on the computer working on some blog entries for various sites I participate on.

How was your weekend? Did you spend it with family and friends or did you take the time for yourself?

OK, I am having so much fun over at Flickr and am getting really good feedback that I wanted to put some of my favorite photographs out on display in their own space, away from this personal journal. Then I remembered I had a space at wordpress.com so voila! My photoblog’s new home! So head over to “Captured“… 🙂

P.S. I am posting almost every day so be sure to stop. I love comments…

(This is a sticky post that I will keep up here a few days).

Back into the swing of things!

Posted by cybertoad on 07/14/2006 in misc |

After a 3 month hiatus I have returned to salsa classes. I took a break during my whole work-overload plus the drive from my previous job to class took easily an hour. Now I can go home for an hour before heading to class and it only takes me about 20 minutes – it’s a much better situation.

So my first class back was this Wednesday and it was nice to see the same friendly faces. Other than being more easily tired and the feet hurting a little sooner than usual, I don’t think I have forgotten much.

Last night I also went dancing. My teacher, who *very rarely* goes out to the clubs, was actually going out last night so I took a friend who is interested in learning and headed out. As always the band sounded great, the music was loud and bodies were shaking and sweaty. LOL.

I didn’t dance as much as I had wanted to but then again, I got winded a little sooner than usual. I left a little after midnight and today I am paying for it. My legs are slightly sore and I am exhuasted. The sleepiness hits me as I sit here and type, my eyes losing focus. I am trying the drastic measure of drinking a Coke at 9:30 AM to see if I can pull myself out of this fogginess. I am consider taking a couple of Advil to see if it eases the soreness.

For the record, I only had one drink last night – a sangria margarita (albeit a strong margarita) – and that was a post-dinner, pre-dancing drink. I don’t like to drink when I dance and instead I guzzled down a bottle of water at the club. So this is not a hangover, I just haven’t been getting enough sleep and it has caught up with me.

So, wish me luck getting through the work-day. Ugh!

Book Reviews #6 & #7

Posted by cybertoad on 07/07/2006 in library |

Since it has been a while since I posted, I owe you guys a couple of book reviews…

When I bought the book, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, I thought it was another fiction book. As I started to read it though I realized it was actually an autobiography! It is an amazing read – truly fascinating – and what I enjoyed most was the author’s matter-of-fact sensibility. It reminded me of myself. My family was nowhere as dysfunctional as hers was but given similar awkward, tense situations she seemed to react to things the same way I did whereas outside parties might be shocked and appalled. As someone who typically does not pick up biographies, I was very happily surprised and quickly sucked into her story. Her writing style is a pleasure to read and I would not hesitate to pick up anything she might write in the future.

The Plot Against America by Philip Roth is another type of book I don’t typically read – it is an alternate history novel. The book takes place during WWII but changes the time-line of events by making Charles Lindbergh beat Roosevelt out for the presidency. Historical events and text are weaved into a new alternative time-line. What makes it compelling is when you find out that there is well-documented evidence that Lindbergh sympathized with parts of the Nazi policy. Add to that the voice of a young Jewish boy coming of age in NJ as the narrator and you can see how things can get interesting. Overall I enjoyed the story but it took me a little longer than I would have liked to finish. The author gets a little bogged down by detail (details that no 7 year old would realistically point out) and with long chapters, I only read it when I knew I could sit with the story for more than 15 minutes. Still, the plot device and the unbeknown-to-me underlying history (an extensive appendix with the true facts of history included) has me interested in reading some of the author’s other novels.
